Itinerary for Peneda-Gerês National Park Expedition

Your private guide will pick you up from your Lisbon accommodation in one of our luxury executive vehicles. Enjoy the scenic drive to Portugal’s only national park, with your driver guide telling you about some breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife you can expect to see on your day trip.
Peneda-Gerês National Park
Arrive at the Peneda-Gerês National Park, known for its stunning landscapes, lush forests, waterfalls, and wildlife. Your driver guide will briefly introduce the park’s history, geography, and biodiversity. Take the chance to grab a coffee or visit one of the small shops for snacks and supplies.
Pedra Bela Viewpoint
Your first destination is the Pedra Bela Viewpoint (Miradouro da Pedra Bela), arguably one of the most iconic scenic spots in Peneda-Gerês National Park. This viewpoint provides a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the Cávado River, Caniçada Dam, and the Gerês mountain range. On clear days, you can see forests, waterfalls, and rolling green hills stretching for miles.
It’s one of the most photographed spots in the park and an excellent opportunity to grab some unique photos with your travel group.
Hike to Tahiti Waterfalls (Cascata de Fecha de Barjas)

Enjoy a light hike to one of the park’s most beautiful waterfalls and take in a hidden natural paradise. The waterfall cascades down multiple rock levels, creating a stunning visual experience. If you’re feeling hot after the light hike, you can cool down with a refreshing swim in one of the natural pools of the waterfall. The Tahiti Waterfalls tend to be quieter than others, allowing for a more peaceful and intimate experience.
Arado Waterfall
One waterfall wasn’t enough for this itinerary, so we included 2! Take the short drive or moderate hike to Cascata do Arado, a hidden gem with crystal-clear waters. The multi-level cascades, surrounded by dense forests and granite cliffs, make for breathtaking photos. This waterfall offers another opportunity for a refreshing swim in the natural pools.
Traditional Lunch in a Local Village
After a morning of exploring, hiking, and swimming, you will probably have worked up an appetite. Enjoy an authentic meal in a traditional Portuguese mountain village. Sample local dishes such as Posta Barrosã (grilled beef), Bacalhau à Gerês (codfish), or local chorizos. This can be paired with Vinho Verde, the region’s signature wine.
Historical Village of Lindoso

Visit the traditional village of Lindoso and enjoy the history, culture, and natural scenery that make it such a fantastic addition to the national park. The quiet village gives you an authentic taste of Portuguese rural life. Visit the famous Espigueiros de Lindoso, which have ancient stone granaries unique to this region. Walking through them feels like stepping back into Portugal’s rural past. Finish your time in the village at Lindoso Castle, a 13th-century medieval fortress that played a key role in Portugal’s battle against Spain. Learn about the village’s strategic military history and importance in protecting the Portuguese border.
Vilarinho das Furnas

Our next stop is a unique attraction, where you visit one of the most mysterious places in the national park. Vilarinho das Furnas was once a thriving village, but was intentionally flooded in 1972 to create a reservoir. When water levels drop, its eerie ruins emerge, revealing the village’s stone houses, pathways, and old streets. This is a rare opportunity to gain a unique glimpse into Portugal’s past. Your guide will tell you all about the history of this lost village and its fascinating past.
Wildlife Spotting & Scenic Drive
Your guide will take you on a scenic drive through the park, looking for wild Garrano horses, deer, and eagles. Stop at scenic points along the way for more photos and short walks.
Depart for Porto
Relax and enjoy the drive back to Porto with scenic views of the Douro region. Your driver guide will drop you back at your Porto accommodation or destination. Our tour designers and guides would happily recommend dinner or evening activities in Porto.
