Your first stop on the Sintra exploration is the mystical Quinta da Regaleira, an eccentrically designed palace surrounded by a luxuriant park.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Quinta da Regaleira was commissioned by an eccentric millionaire, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, in the late 19th century. He enlisted the help of Italian architect Luigi Manini to construct a home that incorporates symbols and structures related to alchemy, Masonry, and the Knights Templar.
The palace’s exterior is a Gothic architectural wonder adorned with intriguing stone carvings, while the interior is a maze of richly decorated rooms. However, the true magic lies in the sprawling gardens, a fascinating labyrinth of lakes, grottoes, and enigmatic constructions, including the famous Initiation Well, a spiraling 27-meter-deep well resembling an inverted tower.
Pena Palace: A Colorful Marvel on Sintra Hills
Next, ascend to the vividly colored Pena Palace, perched atop the Sintra Mountains, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The Pena Palace represents the epitome of 19th-century Romanticism in Portugal and stands as a primary symbol of the region. It was commissioned by King Ferdinand II and is often compared to Neuschwanstein and other similar castles thanks to its fantastical design.
The palace is a blend of various architectural styles, including Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic, and Neo-Renaissance, and painted in vibrant shades of yellow, red, and blue.
Inside, the staterooms remain much as they were in 1910 when the Portuguese nobility fled the country. Explore the extravagant rooms and take in the breathtaking views from the terraces.
Outside, the beautifully landscaped park offers numerous paths through exotic plant species, secret tunnels, and hidden corners, allowing you to discover why Sintra is often referred to as a ‘glorious Eden.’

Sintra National Palace: The Best-Preserved Medieval Royal Palace
Our next stop is the Sintra National Palace, a stunning white edifice adorned with remarkable twin chimneys. Regally located in the heart of the historic town center, the palace’s history dates back to the 10th century, making it the best-preserved medieval royal palace in Portugal.
Step inside to journey back in time. Marvel at the exquisite blend of Gothic, Manueline, Moorish, and Mudejar styles adorning the interiors, each telling a tale of the multicultural influences that have shaped the palace and, in turn, Portuguese history.

We then drive through the verdant Sintra-Cascais Natural Park to reach Cabo da Roca, a dramatic headland heralded as the westernmost point of continental Europe.
Upon arriving, you will be struck by the sheer power of nature. The cape juts out into the roaring Atlantic, offering breathtaking panoramas of the ocean stretching as far as the eye can see.

Once a humble fishing village, Cascais gained fame in the late 19th century when King Luís I of Portugal and the European nobility started holidaying here, transforming it into an elegant seaside resort.
