As we leave Almourol Castle behind, our journey continues towards Tomar, an essential Templar stronghold and the Order’s headquarters in Portugal.
This quaint city, rich with history and charm, was founded inside the walls of the Convento de Cristo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This Convent-Fortress was not only a religious and military base but also a place of profound knowledge, where art and science coexisted harmoniously.
The drive to Tomar winds through picturesque countryside and traditional Portuguese villages. As we draw nearer, the impressive Convento de Cristo comes into view, perched atop a hill, casting its long shadow over the city.
Upon arrival in Tomar, you can immediately sense the city’s historical significance. Its narrow streets, medieval architecture, and serene atmosphere speak volumes about its illustrious past.

Built-in the 15th century, it’s the best-preserved medieval synagogue in Portugal. Its austere exterior contrasts with its elegant interior, featuring a vaulted ceiling and four pillars symbolizing the matriarchs of Judaism. Now functioning as a museum, it provides a fascinating insight into the life of the Jewish community in medieval Portugal.
Aqueduct of Pegões: A Testament to 16th Century Engineering
Journeying just outside the town of Tomar, you’ll encounter the breathtaking Aqueduct of Pegões. This monumental structure stands as a vivid testament to the ingenious engineering prowess of the 16th century.
Designed to deliver water to the Convent of Christ in Tomar, the aqueduct stretches an impressive six kilometers in length, but it’s not just the scale that captivates its visitors; it’s the harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic grace.
The aqueduct was commissioned by King Philip I, and its construction was overseen by military architect Filipe Terzi. It took nearly two decades to complete, with the workforce comprised of skilled stonemasons and unskilled laborers, including prisoners and enslaved people. The aqueduct comprises 58 semicircular arches across its lower levels, while the top tier, where the water channel resides, features 16 pointed arches.
As you walk along the lofty maintenance corridor, you’re treated to panoramic views of the verdant countryside, where the beauty of nature intermingles with the grandeur of human ingenuity. The arches rising from the serene landscape, silhouetted against the sky, offer an unforgettable sight.
