São Jorge Day Tour Itinerary
The itinerary below has been designed to give you inspiration as to how your São Jorge day tour could look. Our tour planners will work with you to establish the locations and attractions that are important to you and design a customized itinerary tailored to your travel group.
Velas Walking Tour

Your private driver-guide will meet you at your accommodation or ferry port, with the first stop of the day at Velas, São Jorge’s picturesque main town. Begin the day with a short walking tour through its quiet streets and seaside promenade. As you stroll past whitewashed chapels, basalt stone houses, and garden-lined courtyards, your guide will share stories of Velas’ maritime roots, its role in island trade, and the volcanic forces that helped shape the harbor’s natural amphitheater.
Coastal Drive to the Island’s Wild Northeast
Enjoy a scenic drive along the north coast in a luxury vehicle while your guide brings the island to life with stories of its volcanic origins, deep agricultural traditions, and the resilient islanders who’ve carved out a way of life in these dramatic, isolated landscapes.
The drive is an attraction in itself, with coastal cliffs plunging into the sea and forested peaks rising inland. Along the way, you’ll stop at panoramic viewpoints, including the iconic Miradouro da Fajã dos Cubres, where your guide will point out the unique network of fajãs stretching along the shoreline and explain how these flat, fertile platforms were created by ancient landslides and lava flows.
Hike or Ride to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo

From the Cubres overlook you’ll continue to the trailhead for the hike to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, considered one of the most scenic walks in the Azores. Your guide will accompany you on this moderate 5km hike, helping to pace the route, provide natural and historical context, and ensure a safe and enriching experience throughout. The path weaves through forested ridges, rocky ledges, and expansive sea views that shift with every step.
For those who prefer a gentler option or have mobility considerations, your guide can adjust the plan to include partial vehicle access along service routes or arrange for a quad transfer to the fajã, depending on conditions and availability.
Once you reach Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, the effort is instantly rewarded. This peaceful, roadless hamlet rests beside a serene lagoon with stone cottages, freshwater springs, and an atmosphere of quiet seclusion. Your guide will share insights into the village’s origins, its significance in Azorean culture, and the traditions that continue to shape life here.
Scenic Southern Coast Drive

After lunch, you’ll have time to explore the fajã or simply relax and take in the surroundings before beginning the journey back, either by hiking out with your guide or returning partway by vehicle. Once back on the main road, your guide will continue the experience with a scenic drive along the island’s southern coast, offering a different flavor of São Jorge: more wooded, more remote, and dotted with traditional farms and coastal lookouts.
Make a stop at a cheese factory or farm shop, where your guide will walk you through the history of Queijo de São Jorge, one of the Azores’ most iconic food products. With bold, tangy flavors and a rich heritage, the cheese is still made using traditional raw milk methods—a story your guide will bring vividly to life during the tasting.
Depending on time and energy, you may stop at a natural swimming area or clifftop viewpoint to soak in one last perspective of the island’s wild beauty before returning to Velas.
Return to Velas
Your guide will return you to Velas by early evening, either to your accommodation or the ferry terminal, depending on your travel plans.
