Terceira Private Day Tour Itinerary
The itinerary below has been designed with you traveling from São Miguel
Island in the morning and returning there in the evening after your day tour. However, this itinerary is merely a sample that we can personalize to your individual needs and requirements. If you are not staying in São Miguel, we can customize the tour to start and end at a location of your choosing.
São Miguel to Terceira & Arrival in Angra do Heroísmo
Early Flight from Ponta Delgada (PDL) to Lajes (TER): Begin your day with a short 35-minute flight to Terceira. Upon arrival, your private driver-guide will greet you at the airport. Enjoy your first glimpse of Terceira’s verdant hills and ocean views as you head to the island’s crown jewel, Angra do Heroísmo
Angra do Heroísmo – A UNESCO Gem

Spend the morning of your private day tour in Angra do Heroismo. Highlights of your time here include:
Historic Center Walking Tour: Explore the heart of Angra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its 16th-century architecture, cobbled lanes, and rich maritime history. Your guide will share stories about how Angra was once a key stop for Portuguese ships crossing the Atlantic during the Age of Discovery.
Sé Cathedral & City Hall: Admire the baroque grandeur of Angra’s cathedral and the picturesque town square lined with pastel-hued buildings.
Monte Brasil Viewpoint: Drive up to this extinct volcano for panoramic views over the city and the Atlantic. Your guide will explain its importance in both natural history and military defense.
Lunch: Terceira’s Flavors at a Local Quinta
Dine at a charming countryside restaurant or Quinta, where you’ll savor Alcatra, Terceira’s signature slow-cooked beef stew baked in clay pots. Vegetarian alternatives are available upon request.
Algar do Carvão

In the afternoon, you’ll explore something truly special: the inside of a volcano. Algar do Carvão is a lava tube you can actually walk into. You’ll descend into a cool, otherworldly chamber filled with mossy rock walls, dramatic stalactites, and a clear little underground lake. It’s quiet, almost like a natural cathedral, and your guide will explain how this amazing formation came to be.
Not far away, Furnas do Enxofre offers another wild look at the island’s volcanic side. Here, you’ll follow a short trail past bubbling mud, steaming vents, and strong smells of sulfur in the air—it’s like walking through the Earth’s kitchen! Your guide will talk you through the science behind it all in a fun and easy-to-follow way.
Serra do Cume Viewpoint

Next, it’s off to Serra do Cume, one of the most famous viewpoints in the Azores. From up here, the land appears to be a giant green quilt composed of small fields separated by stone walls. It’s a perfect place to snap a few photos and take in the beauty of the rural and peaceful island.
Praia da Vitória – Coastal Charm & Leisure

Before your flight back, you’ll have time to relax in the seaside town of Praia da Vitória. Walk along the beach promenade, enjoy a coffee or ice cream by the marina, or stop by some local shops for souvenirs, such as handmade embroidery or volcanic jewelry. It’s a laid-back way to end the day.
Evening Flight Back to São Miguel
Return to Lajes Airport for your flight back to Ponta Delgada. We will then drive you back to your accommodation, where you can relax for the rest of the evening after an unforgettable day trip.
